Conservation & Environment (7 Days)
Introduction
This 7-day tour is designed for those passionate about environmental conservation and sustainable development. Participants will explore Rwanda’s diverse ecosystems, engage with community-led sustainability projects, and learn from leading conservation organizations. From trekking with mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park to exploring the research and conservation efforts of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, this trip offers a unique blend of adventure and education. Ideal for environmentalists, researchers, and students, this itinerary provides a comprehensive understanding of Rwanda’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and fostering sustainable practices.
Itinerary details
Day 1: Arrival & Introduction
• Arrival in Kigali, airport transfer, and hotel check-in.
• Welcome dinner and briefing on the itinerary.
• Introductory session on Rwanda’s diverse ecosystems and conservation efforts.
Day 2: Volcanoes National Park & Gorilla Trekking
• Early morning trek mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, accompanied by
experienced guides.
• Afternoon: Visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Karisoke Research Centre to learn about
their long-term research and conservation work.
Day 3: Community Engagement & Sustainability Projects
• Morning: Visit to the APEFA organization and their project of solar-powered irrigation and
improved cooking stoves for communities in Bugesera
• Afternoon: Visit at the Ntarama Genocide Museum
Day 4: Field Visit & Research Institutions
• Morning: Visit the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) to gain insights into
national environmental policies and regulations.
• Afternoon: Tour of the Nyandungu Eco-Park
• Evening discussion on the challenges and opportunities for environmental conservation in
Rwanda.
Day 5: Southern Corridor
• Visit the Nyanza King’s Palace, a historical landmark showcasing Rwanda’s past monarchy.
• Sightseeing of Huye, the first capital of the country. Afternoon visit of the Ethnographic
museum
• Drive and overnight at Uwinka Overlook
Day 6: Nyungwe National Park
• Morning champanzee trek and birdwatching and canopy walk through Nyungwe Forest,
offering panoramic views
• Afternoon: Visit to Trocaire project oriented towards empowering rural, poor communities
living around the Nyungwe National Park to assess, plan and sustainably manage their land
and common natural resources leading to more environmentally and economically
sustainable and resilient communities.
Day 7: Departure
• Airport transfer and departure from Kigali.
