Genocide-Reconciliation Tour (6 Days)

Introduction

This 7-day Genocide-Reconciliation Tour offers a profound and insightful journey into Rwanda’s past and its remarkable path to healing and unity. Participants will engage deeply with the history of the 1994 genocide, visiting significant memorials and interacting with organizations dedicated to reconciliation and peacebuilding. This tour is designed for those who seek to understand the complexities of Rwanda’s tragic history and its efforts toward reconciliation and healing. Through guided tours, community interactions, and educational workshops, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the country’s resilience and ongoing commitment to peace.

Itinerary details

Day 1: Arrival & Introduction

• Arrival in Kigali, airport transfer, and hotel check-in.
• Welcome dinner and briefing on the itinerary, focusing on the importance of understanding
the genocide and its aftermath.

Day 2: Kigali Genocide Memorial

• Guided tour of the Kigali Genocide Memorial
• Participate in a reflection session facilitated by the AEGIST Trust, an organization dedicated to
survivor support, research, and education about the genocide. Learn about their initiatives in
supporting survivors, promoting healing, and preventing future atrocities.

Day 3: Reconciliation Initiatives & Community Engagement

• Visit the Gitsimbwe Reconciliation Village in Nyamasheke, where survivors and perpetrators
live side-by-side. Interact with residents, listen to their stories, and gain insights into the
challenges and successes of reconciliation efforts.
• Afternoon: Visit of the Kamiranzovu Waterfall and canopy walk in Nyungwe National Park
• Evening: Spending the night at Uwinka Overlook in the park

Day 4: Visit to Huye and Nyanza

• Morning: Drive to Huye to visit the ethnographic museum in Huye
• Afternoon: Visit at the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza
• Evening: Drive back to Kigali and free evening

Day 5: Never Again Rwanda workshop

• Morning: Participate in a workshop organized by Never Again Rwanda, on peacebuilding and
unity.
• Afternoon: A farewell traditional Rwandan cultural performance at Kunda Eco-Art space,
celebrating the country’s vibrant culture and resilience.
• Evening: Dinner at Ikoro Restaurant

Day 6: Departure

• Airport transfer and departure from Kigali.
